Yet another BULLSEYE for Fluance XL series
By MustangMichael
I bought these direct from Fluance due to a killer pre-order intro price promotion, so Amazon can't confirm this purchase. The price was so low, I actually contacted Fluance to ask if it was just 1 speaker cabinet assembly? But no, it is a pair.
If you've looked at my other Fluance XL series speaker reviews here in Amazon or in Fluance, you'll already know I had pretty high expectations. Can the XLBP possibly live up to my lofty expectations?? It seemed unlikely to me. However, they have far exceeded anything I hoped for.
This gets lengthy because these speakers are superb. ***SYNOPSIS*** if you lack the time for the below diatribe:
Highly recommended as surrounds OR as bookshelf speakers or as budget MAINS! Absolutely amazing. edit: I keep thinking "no way can these be this good", so I'm keeping these bad boys hooked up as mains for a few days until I can get my mind around it. In direct comparison, these far exceed the sound quality of my Klipsch Reference RB-42 II's for way less money.
Details:
First off, the pictures make these look somewhat bigger than they look in real life. They're still largish for a surround, but I'm glad they don't look huge in person.
One lady in Fluance customer reviews said she used these "wide dispersion bipolar surround speakers" as mains for quite awhile and was amazed at how well they served even at high sound levels - though being used as mains is not their stated purpose. I doubted that thinking maybe a bit of exaggeration there... but I don't think that any more!
As with my other Fluance surround speakers, I hooked these up to my Yamaha AVR main channels for some healthy testing to make sure there weren't any noises or bad habits. I didn't whale on them as Fluance wants 10 hours of break in at "normal volume".
BTW, since the time when I posted some of my other Fluance XL speaker reviews, I've upgraded from the old time Yamaha RV-1105 AVR to an RX-A820 Aventage AVR. That is why YPAO will be mentioned below whereas I didn't have YPAO on my 1105 during my early Fluance XL reviews. Just as you might expect, the Yamaha YPAO automatic eq improved the sound to even higher quality for all my Fluance speakers. Using the 820 in 7.1 + 2 mode, the sound just floors me. Back to these XLBP surrounds:
Believe this or don't - I can hardly believe it: My front channels are dialed by YPAO and set as "LARGE" for my main speakers. The sound reproduction testing with these odd looking surround speakers plugged into those main channels is AMAZING. Crisp clear treble and highs, excellent mid range, good mid bass and surprisingly ~ very good bass! Regarding mid-bass: YPAO has my main channels currently set for the XL7F towers and at low ohms, so I fully expect excellent mid-bass from the XLBP's when YPAO dials these speakers in at whatever position I use them. The XLBP's are very close to the sound quality of the mains! I'm astounded. I have no clue how this is possible.
Here's an odd thing I didn't expect: I thought the angled locations of the speaker drivers on the XLBP's would mean there would be a dead zone or weak spot directly in front of the cabinet. NOT AT ALL. To the contrary, the sound really comes alive in that zone! I can't see how that can be, but I'm not a sound engineer.
These speakers are currently priced at $199 and for that price, they're yet another Fluance deal of the decade, IMHO. I'm not gonna say what I paid in the intro promotion 'cause you'd probably hate me for it. Conversely, while deeply discounted for intro price, I had to wait 2 months for these speakers and at times wondered if I'd ever get them. Also, because of the odd form factor, I wondered if I was tossing money out the window. Now I wish I'd have ordered 3 pair! I'm probably gonna order another pair while they're still at $199 for unknown future apps. Probably as main (shelf speakers) in my den..?
I think now the XLBP's are in full production & in stock, so you probably won't have to wait a long time like I did. It was a bit annoying waiting and wondering sometimes.. edit: I just checked and as of today, Amazon shows these in stock. Ya' know what that means, 'cause Amazon gets stuff shipped pronto!
Negatives:
I feel like an ingrate nitpicking these awesome speakers even if at the MSRP price point of $299. In my experience, nothing made by us humans is perfect. With that in mind, here are the nits:
1.) I was a bit perplexed by the smell when opening the box. I first thought... "is that smoke?" After my mind computed for a bit and took a whiff up close a few more times, I think it is the adhesives used in the cases. I could only smell it close up, so I won't mark the score down for this unless I begin to smell it in my living room or at a distance.
2.) The piano black front paint isn't as nice as previous Fluance speakers. It has more "orange peel" and has a few flecks of dirt in the paint. Major detraction? Not at all. My point of reference: I'm a former auto body guy and auto painter, so I am VERY picky about paint. Will I consider returning these due to the paint? No way! From 3 feet and farther, the piano black looks just fine. Maybe even spiffy. One bigger grain of dirt might snag when dusting the speakers. No biggie, just sayin'.
3.) As with my other Fluance surround speakers, standard banana plugs do not fully seat in the provided holes in the binding posts. In fact, they only go half way in. I therefore consider they are not secure enough and instead use the thumb nuts on the binding posts and clamp the stripped wires under these. Some say their Fluance XL7F's are like this, too, however, my banana plugs fully seat in my XL7F's. I view this as a minor annoyance on the XLBP and not a deal breaker.
There you have it; those are the negatives I found. I view those as super minor cons for speakers that perform like this at such a low price point. Back to other attributes:
Further mitigation of the piano black is that the faux mahogany veneer and fit & finish of the MDF cases is just as stellar as with all my other Fluance XL speakers.
My Fluance XL series speakers were bought piecemeal because I was very skeptical, but not any more. Anyway, due to buying piecemeal, I was worried about whether the mahogany on the various XL cases would match. I can't see any difference and due to my aforementioned background have a pretty cynical eye for color match.
Fluance currently shows these speakers for $199 for a PAIR with normal price maybe eventually going to $299. I would consider them an excellent value even at $299.
I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but just as with all my other Fluance XL series speakers: "Highly recommended; AMAZING value". Another comparison: These XLBP surrounds destroy my former JBL towers for sound quality. I know; you probably can't believe it. I'm still incredulous myself.
While I've said that Fluance's other XL surrounds could be used as mains with a sub, I'll go farther than that with these. If your space is small, these would make amazing bookshelf mains even WITHOUT a sub. Yes, better with a sub, just sayin' these things have more bass than should be legal in a 'not big' speaker case. ;-)
I have one concern left about these speakers: Due to the angled speaker driver location, will my Yamaha YPAO automatic eq program go insane trying to dial them in? Why it's not a major concern: If YPAO tilts, I'll simply use the previously saved program for the existing surround speakers that were used before, then plug in the XLBP's and give them a try. I hope I don't have to do that, but it's my workaround just in case.
I'll update here if the glue odor becomes bothersome or if YPAO freaks out.
Yet another edit: OMG, but the acoustical guitars in Ventura Highway (America) image all over the place with the XLBP's operating as mains... effectively, they make the sound like I'd expect if I had another 10 feet of stereo main speaker separation.

Amazing sound
By Daniel A. Faulk
I needed new surround speakers and, by sheer chance, I came across a review of this company ( Fluance) and of their surround speakers...taking a chance I ordered these speakers. They arrived yesterday and I hooked them up, temporarily, as my main speakers ( I purchased some brand new Wharfedale 10.5's as my mains but they ....are a REAL Disappointment). These cheap surrounds are amazing. They sound so much better than the 10.5's!!!!!!! They are not even broken in and they have fine detail, great high and mid range, look good, sound great. I am now a convert to Fluance and wish I had purchased their main speakers instead of the Wharfedales...

Better the 2nd time around. :)
By Kevin W
I was hopeful these would meet my needs but was primarily disappointed by the finish. Both had top edges that were either made defective or crushed at one point. I must say the double-box shipping was great, so the speakers were likely in bad shape before they were boxed. As for sound, I only tried them a few minutes. They seemed to require more to drive then my Paradigm surrounds. They also had a smaller range where they would start to distort as the volume was increased. Because of the price, I would consider Fluance in the future. I would love to see these in the black with the rounded edges like the smaller surrounds Fluance offers.
Update (11/14/2013)
I have reordered a pair of Fluance XLBP speakers thanks to the help from customer service and an offer I couldn't refuse. Looking forward to getting the new speakers. I will comment again once they arrive.
Update (11/25/2013)
I received and have tested my new set of Fluance XLBP speakers. This set came undamaged and sounded great. I want to thank the customer service people for handling the issues I had professionally and quickly. I am likely to buy more in the future from Fluance.
