5Cheap, great Bass
By Jeremiah D. Siegel
For such an economy unit, this system is really worth every penny. The bass is really good if you set it to "powerful" and eq everything properly. The sound is a lot bigger than the speakers it comes out of. Sound clarity is pretty good when watching movies, and when blasting music the audio never clips. A great buy! don't listen to what other people say if you know how to set it up it's a really good, cheap set of speakers.

3I returned mine and it was working!
By Rubicks Cuber
It get 3 stars because the DVD player did work ok. This system did perform as an amp very well. It was minimally louder than the rear speakers on my Samsung LCD tv. I never heard any bass until I put my ear right next to the subwoofer with the volume maxed out. My wife thought it was only a DVD player and not even an amp.

As an economy unit, I expected minimal audio quality. I needed a little volume. This unit has weak audio so it was hard to rate the quality. If you need a DVD player to eject fast, do not buy this one. I got at Walmart for under $100. Since DVD players with HDMI out are around $50, this is worth about $60. It is nice that the rear surround speakers include some decently long wires. However, after using for 2 days, I took mine back. I wanted an economy system, but the supposed 200 watts of power are poorly distributed on this unit. You need less power to rear. This 5.1 system gives equal power to all 5, and obviously not enough to the 0.1 (sub).

The box did not provide enough specifications. I hate to be so critical. It OK for a small cheap player, but should not even be in the "Home Theater" category of electronics.

4I've had this for over 5 years now.

UPDATE (Mar 14th, 2013)

I am taking a star off for absolutely no mounting holes existing (call me petty). I just bought a new surround sound system with more power and a nice blu-ray player which I might actually use in place of my PS3 blu-ray drive, and after seeing how nicely it goes up on my walls with mounting brackets I bought from Amazon, I think it's a shame that this unit doesn't even have the plain-jane keyhole design, especially when you consider the size of each speaker.

REVIEW (Feb 22nd, 2013)

I upgraded to this 200w system after getting frustrated with my previous 100w system in either 2007 or 2008. I've had to perform minor surgeries on the speaker wires (trimming the plastic off to expose fresh metal wiring to fit into the back of the receiver/dvd player) numerous times, at very little sacrifice to the cord length. If you have a problem with the speaker wires on the speaker end, it's pretty easy to dissect the speakers themselves and fix them; I've only had to do this once.

The sound quality is awesome. I tailor the speakers to different volume settings depending on where I have them set up in my living room, and I usually set the subwoofer setting (not to be confused with the subwoofer volume) to the highest overall bass setting - Powerful - (The other three are Soft, Balanced, and Strong.) I have a PS3, Xbox 360 and a Wii U hooked up to my tv, and this sound system makes them sound amazing. Video games are probably the best indicators of good surround sound, in my opinion, because so much of the action relies on sounds coming through different speakers. If an enemy is approaching behind you, the rear speakers will pan their footsteps from left to right as they flank you. I cannot complain about the quality of the 5.1 surround in these speakers. If you are a movie buff, fear not. 5 years ago I found out that "Daredevil" - the one with Ben Affleck - utilized 5.1 surround sound better than any movie, when rats in the sewers skittered behind my couch from the rear speakers, and bullets in Hell's Kitchen ricocheted off the walls and shot from my rear speakers across all the front and side speakers. I recommend popping that movie in if you want to test your speakers out, whether you actually like that sort of movie or not. And last night I had another opportunity to watch Marvel's The Avengers again, and the overall climactic feel of the movie was preserved to almost theater-level intensity. I noticed there were scenes where I had to turn the surround up to hear quiet voices, and back down again for loud, intense battle sequences, but leaving the speakers up all the way didn't affect the quality of the sound. No cracking or popping. And mind you, this review is 5+ years in the making. Also keep in mind that I generally keep the subwoofer setting up all the way, so at a lower subwoofer setting (balanced and strong sound great, too, but I indulge since I live alone) your movies or games, etc., will still sound really good and it might improve the quality of lower voices without so much excess bass. I just really love the big movie feel that higher setting gives me.

I haven't used the dvd player portion of the unit since I bought it. MAYBE once or twice, but I don't remember. I live in an age where you can buy a dvd player for $20 or ignore it altogether since you're either watching streaming video, gaming, or playing your dvds and blu-rays through another player or gaming console anyway. I'm pretty sure it worked when I used it, but like I said, I used my PS2 for movies before this, and now PS3 and every other gaming system known to man.

It should be noted that the speakers in this system do NOT have any holes in the back of them for mounting on a wall or into wall-mounting peripherals. I just ordered some wall-mounts from amazon and I will have to drill holes in these to make them work. If I get around to it, I'll amend this review with that information.

All in all, I wanted 1.) great, powerful sound, 2.) true 5.1 surround, and 3.) low price. I think I paid $200 when this was new, and I haven't been disappointed with it. Not being able to wall mount them without performing surgery on them is the biggest drawback, but I'm not going to be petty and degrade the product for that. Though when I first got it, I was upset since my previous, cheaper, and lower wattage unit had them.
