Better than I hoped for

I recently purchased a 55" Sumsung LED Smart TV and wall mounted it using the Cheetah wall mount model AP SAMB 32-55". The room is actually an open floor plan kitchen, dining room, and living room, measuring 27' x 30'. This mount allows me to angle the TV left to right, up to 90 degrees from the wall. This feature however, does not work well with a conventional 5:1 sound system. After weeks of researching soundbars, I was skeptical about purchasing one, mainly because of the "lack of sound" comments in larger rooms. I also wanted a soundbar that was the same length as the TV, but that was not an easy task either. Finally, I came across the Polk CHT 500, which matches the TV length at 49". Cool! But, there are no reviews, needs an A/V receiver, comes with a SDA box which I'm not familiar with, and is a bit pricey. Well, someone has to be the tip of the sword. Jumped on Amazon and purchased this soundbar, the Denon AVR 1612 receiver, and the Polk PSW111 subwoofer. First, all products were received properly packaged which was a relief. The soundbar is well built and high quality in my opinion. I machined a bracket to mount the soundbar to the TV, so the soundbar went where the TV was facing. I wish I could post a pic...it turned out looking awesome! One thing to note here. The cable that connects the soundbar to the SDA box is approx. 3/4" in diameter with 30 wires encased in it, and has a rectangular plug on each end for simple hook up. Then you wire the SDA box to your receiver. I ran this cable and the HDMI hookup for the TV behind the wall so nothing is showing. Now, the moment of truth. Powered it up, popped in th Eagles Hell Freezes Over live cd from 1999 and cranked her up. Ok, sounds pretty good. My son, who is the electronics wiz, tweaks the settings on the receiver, and wow, now it sounds great! And, I can over power the room too with crystal clear sound. Later I'll add the two rear speakers for true surround sound. I think the room is too big to get sound deflection off the walls to immitate surround sound, but I didn't buy it for that anyway. I am not an audiophile, but I do like listening to good music and watching action movies. I am extremely happy with this purchase.

Went out on a limb

I couldn't find much for reviews on the 500, but I needed a speaker to be able to fit in a 2closet inch niche so I decided to take a chance on the 500. I don't have it mounted yet but the sound is great. I have it setup as LCR with a nice sub and 2the rear surround speakers.

Great sound, but...

Due to mounting constraints (I have this mounted on a stone fireplace along with my tv and had no where to run three sets of speaker cables) I decided to go with a high-end soundbar over dedicated left, center, and right channel speakers in my 5.1 sound system. This was a great choice as far as sound is concerned - I really couldn't be happier, but setup is surprisingly difficult for a soundbar. Nothing that anyone with experience would have issues with, but a novice may struggle a bit. Upon unboxing, I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality. This is a very sturdy and attractive bar. It's also pretty big (slightly longer than my 55in flatscreen).

You'll need to buy speaker wire to wire each channel from the SDA module to the corresponding channel on your receiver. As is the case with most speakers, speaker wire is not included, so you should buy this ahead of time. The cable from the Soundbar to the SDA module is also very large and only relatively pliable. I had to get a bit creative to hide it.

Sound is great, but you'll want to pair this with a subwoofer (and perhaps some rear channel speakers) to get the full affect. I used a Polk wireless 10in subwoofer and polk in-ceiling rear channel speakers and am a very happy camper.
