5Home Theatre set up: Best bang for your buck

Bought this after doing some research and seeing that Yamaha audio products are pretty much universally lauded for their quality and acoustics. I'm an mid-level DIY'er but paid somebody to run the wire and mount the speakers.

I was finishing our basement and adding a home theatre room and the price of this package is GREAT. I didn't use the speaker wire as I wanted something with better shielding for in wall use, but that's a minor quibble. Buy with confidence from this seller: My products arrived quickly and in great condition.

The speaker tilt system is an awesome feature that allows you to direct the sound more precisely toward your listening areas. I used only 5 of the 6 speakers as my system is Dolby 5.1.

Setup couldn't be easier: Once the speakers are installed you simply plugin the included mike, place it in the center of your seating/listening area and let it run through it's pre-programmed automated setup. This process only a takes a few minutes and progress is displayed on screen as the amp plays a series of tones over a range of frequencies/volumes to optimize your speakers sound based upon their location.

Sound is clean, crisp, and pretty awesome. First thing I tested was a live soccer match. Very cool hearing the cheers and claps coming from behind you and all around. Movies and TV are similarly impressive though for most sound you'll be hearing dialogue our of your center channel speaker.

You'll have to buy a separate powered sub-woofer to complete your setup and really get that thumping base, but at this price point, it makes getting your theatre package together a doable task. My only gripe is lack of any kind of RF/hidden console feature that allows remote control function via RF rather than infrared line of sight. This remote is only infrared and you must either have the front panel of the unit in the viewing area or use an IR extender (my solution). The new cable boxes I have allow you to select either IR or RF. This would have been a nice feature but that is a minor criticism of what is an awesome combo package of speakers and amp.

Great features, great quality, great price point.

3Poor customer support and return policy.

While the system is very good, the customer service is terrible. The system clearly shows six speakers, but there are only plugins for four after you plug in a center sound bar and a sub-woofer. Sellers (DB Roth and Amazon) will not reply to a request for refund on the two extra speakers. Speakers are really easy to install. Don't expect to get customer support from sellers ... if you are a person that anticipates customer support ... go to a reputable merchant's store.
