Step up to these larger speakers

Great full sound for an in-ceiling speaker and much better than the smaller size speakers in the same line especially with the lower frequencies.

The directional tweeter is convenient to direct the sound towards the primary listening area and it does improve the sound compared to leaving it pointed straight down.

Polk advertises something called infinite baffle which uses the empty space behind the speaker for improved bass response but it would be nice to have a baffle with these speakers to prevent the sound from bleeding into other rooms (especially when used on the first floor of a two story house).

Installation is fairly easy as long as you don't have any obstructions in your ceiling. Make sure to be in the correct space before cutting the holes. There are brackets that pop out to hold the drywall from above when you start tightening the screws.

Two switches under the grill are for setting the distance to the nearest wall and for a tweeter setting.

Love these!

These are worth the money if you want great sound and don't want to be cluttered with surround sound speakers. They have awesome sounds, both with television and music. We just use two in our 20' high ceilings and are thrilled with the crisp, clear sound.

Awesome sound for the price!

Being my first in-ceiling install, I wasn't expecting much from the overall sound quality compared to good old fashion floor standing speakers. The only reason for going to the ceiling for this project is the room design did not fit for floor speakers, also to some degree the listeners were not as concerned with high fidelity in the room. Installation of the speakers was straight forward and easy. Only recommendation for DIY folks is to buy foam"hats" to go over the the back part of the speaker to keep insulation and other debris from falling onto the cone...Parts Express carries them but read my reviews there to make sure you get the right size. Any case, the sound from these was truly remarkable even to a sound snob like me. I should mention that I set the base cutoff at 120Hz and used a separate Yamaha YST-FSW150 subwoofer (Crutchfield) so was not using these to drive the lower frequencies. Nice flat response from 120Hz up to 10KHz (didn't test beyond since the primary listener, age 70+, hearing cut out ~6.5KHz).

One of the problems I knew I was going to encounter was mounting these close to the wall (center 16" from wall)...not by choice but due to the ceiling beams. What I really liked is there is a switch on these that lets you adjust for this situation. What I found in our case was the wall was solid (insulation me thinks) and by adjusting the base crossover a little higher than normal that I did not need to use this setting.

Total config was three Polk Audio TC80i (Amazon - best price by far) in the front, two TC60i (Crutchfield) surround, and the Yamaha subwoofer in a recessed home theatre cabinet. Most definitely recommend for a good sound at mid-price point.
