5Amazing Sound System
By Dr. Bojan Tunguz
These days I use TV to almost exclusively for News and Sports, as well as movies and other scripted programing on my DVD player. The kinds of movies that I particularly enjoy watching rely in large measure on sound effects for the purposes of setting the mood and ambiance, so the good output sound quality is very important to me. Until recently I had primarily relied on lower-end surround sound systems, so when I got the opportunity to review the Aura home theatre sound bar with wireless subwoofer I was very excited to try out a new way of enjoying the full rich sound to go with my TV. The experience has been phenomenal, and I am extremely happy with this product.

**** Build ****

The first thing that I noticed about this sound bar was how large it was. The box looked enormous on my porch, which is where the delivery guy had left it. I knew that the bar was 42" long, but it still left a strong impression on me when I first saw it. The size also means that the sound bar will best go with TV sets that are 47" diagonal or larger - otherwise it will quite literally stick out. Aside from the aesthetic considerations, the soundbar can be used with almost any TV or other musical source.

In addition to being very long, the sound bar is also fairly heavy. This is primarily due to the very high quality of the build of this sound bar. Many of its parts are built out of metal and not some cheap plastic. The same holds for the subwoofer - it is large and fairly heavy, and it will not fit easily on the shelves of most entertainment centers. This is OK because for the best results you want to place it on the floor anyways.

**** Features ****

The sound bar is designed to be able to receive signal from a variety of sources: optical (S/PDIF), digital coax, RCA in (analog L/R), and mini stereo input jack. The last of these can be used to connect your MP3 player or a computer to the sound bar. The sound bar should have had a dedicated iPod docking station, and this would have greatly enhanced its usefulness, especially considering the design features of the remote (see below).

The advantage of using a sound bar instead of the multi-speaker surround sound system is that this way you don't have to deal with calibrating the placement of the speakers around the room, as well as dealing with all the cords that this setup would ordinarily require.

The sound bar's stand doubles as a mounting attachments. I have not chosen to mount my sound bar, but from the look of it it would seem that this would not be a significantly complicated thing to do.

**** Setup ****

Setting up this sound bar with subwoofer was extremely easy. The advantage of having a sound bar as opposed to surround-sound speakers is that there are many fewer component speakers to deal with. All you have to do with this system is 1) connect the sound bar to TV, 2) plug in the power supply, 3) plug in the subwoofer into the wall, 4) turn everything on, 5) choose external speaker on your TV's setup menu. And that's it! The space behind my living room's entertainment system is already a warren of cables, and I was glad that there were no significant additions to that configuration. The setup would have been slightly more straightforward (and self-contained) if the power supply were integrated into the sound bar, but even like this it is not a significant issue.

**** Sound Quality ****

This is by far the most important feature of any speaker system, and the sound quality of this sound bar/subwoofer is simply fantastic. It quite frankly blew past all of my expectations. As I am writing this I am listening to my iPhone tunes and have one huge grin on my face. The sound is incredibly rich and crisp, the low notes coming from the subwoofer can shake the house, and the high ones are will resonate clearly without becoming screechy. When I first connected the sound bar to my TV I was watching a news show, something that will ordinarily not excite your aural sensibilities. However, I was immediately taken by the surprising crispness of the spoken word, as well as with the between-the-segments jingles which acquired considerably more oomph. Next I tested it on several music channels, and was really impressed with the way that they all sounded. I tested it on a few movies as well: one of the episodes of "Battlestar Galactica" (one which actually has some real action), as well as the more action packed scenes from "War of the Worlds" and "Inception". This sound system has passed all of these tests with flying colors. In terms of sound quality this is the best sound system that I have come across in a while.

**** Remote Control ****

The remote control is very simple and straightforward. It very obviously takes after the Apple's design, with just a click-wheel and two buttons on its surface. The click-wheel could also in principle be used to control your iPod or iPhone playback, but only if you get a specialized docking station. The back of the remote slides out and reveals several additional controls: subwoofer, bass and treble volumes, input source, choice between different surround options. The back doesn't slide all that smoothly, and I usually have to use both of my hands to open it up. It is also very easy to accidentally press one of the control buttons while the back is being opened up.

The remote looks elegant, but it feels a bit cheap - certainly more so than the rest of this sound system. Nonetheless, it gets the job done and it's

**** Conclusion ****

To say that I was impressed with this sound system would be an understatement. With the exception of few design shortcomings of the remote, this is an almost flawless system. It will considerably enhance your enjoyment of TV shows, movies, and music. Any audiophile will certainly derive a lot of pleasure from it. If its within your budget, I would highly recommend it.

5Pleasantly surprised!
By Nikki W.
My Bedroom TV is a 42" plasma that I was never really happy with the sound from just the TV speakers. Since its in my bedroom I couldn't get a complete home theater system and even a full HTIB wouldn't work and I didn't want wires and speakers all over the room.

The Aura sound bar was perfect as it suited all my needs. It contains 1 sound bar speaker that gets placed near the TV and a wireless subwoofer (no receiver or other equipment is needed). Directly on the sound bar, you control the volume, inputs, and other settings. The sound bar is a perfect match for my TV as they are the same length (42" but it would look fine next to a bigger or smaller TV). The sound bar can just sit in front of the TV or you can even wall mount (no extra hardware needed) it above/below your TV if your TV is mounted on the wall.

The subwoofer is nice and compact but the best thing is that its wireless. This allowed me to place it in the corner of the room so I can get optimal sound and not have any wires running across the floor.

Connecting these 2 pieces is so easy to do, any one can do it with out needing any audio/visual expertise. It comes with everything you need to get running out of the box (if you want to use an optical audio cable, that you will need to get separately) but it is 100% usable with the wires that come with it. You can have this entire system connected in 5 minutes. They even include a nice little remote so you can change the inputs, volume, and sound settings (bass, treble, etc...).

I haven't had the chance to hook up my ipod to it, but it also has a mini plug connection so you can plug in your ipod or an ipod dock directly to it without having to disconnecting anything else.

I was absolutely amazed by the sound that came out of these 2 pieces. The separation of the audio is incredible. The first thing I turned on was a movie with car racing and explosions. It seemed like I had rear speakers with the way the sound effects came out of this system such as the cars racing from the right side of the screen to the left with the audio transitioning perfectly. The sound completely filled my room nicely and was very clear, at low and high levels. I was skeptical about a wireless subwoofer having a delay or being distorted/cutting out but had no issues at all. For the size of the subwoofer, it really packs a punch.

I am extremely pleased with this sound bar. If you have limited space or a limited budget, or don't want to mess with several pieces of equipment, but want to take full advantage of digital audio, this is definitely a great option for your home theater.

5Superb quality sound, user-friendly and affordable
By Simon Cleveland
The very first impression of this product for me was cost. What's I am getting at is that the cost of this product in my opinion is way lower than the value it delivers.

What I mean is this: The Aura sound is made of high quality materials that produce great resonance and deliver superior quality sound. Think about the Stradivarius violin and the material that went into it. All I am trying to do here is give you an analogy.

The Aura is not a small size product. Prepare to lift nearly 40 lbs when you receive the box. It is truly a commendable size, but who said good things come in small sizes?

The setup is also an easy process. Unpack, plug-in and turn on. That's pretty much the process. The device comes with optical output as well as RCA output, so you won't have to buy adapters, or wonder how to hook up other devices to it.

So bottom line: if you want superb quality sound, that is packaged in a user-friendly product and is affordable at the same time, then go for Aura.
Highly recommended.
