5Blue Tooth Speaker
By Ralph Furlong
UPDATE: 21 Nov 2012

The company responded to my inquiry about the speaker and told me that the speaker is a monaural and not stereo speaker. While I presumed that, I was not sure and wanted to be able to post the correct information here. Inspite of that, the speaker provides amazing sound. One other piece of information, while there is not a serial number on the unit, there is apparently a serial number on the packaging that the speaker comes in. So, DO NOT DISCARD your packaging before copying down the serial number of the unit!!

REVIEW:

I asked for this item because I thought it would be nice to see how far wireless speakers have come with Bluetooth capability. I was not really expecting much from the speakers, just hoped for high enough quality to be able to listen to podcasts while in the garage.

The speaker arrived and it both impressed and frustrated me with the packaging and the weight. The packing is heavy weight plastic and is a bit of a pain to open. The speaker is solid and felt like a brick in weight. Actually, it is only 13 ounces, but it sure feels heavy to compared to most electronics that size. The instructions tell you to charge it first and they do not include a charger. They do, however, include a short cable with a plug for the unit and a USB termination. Since I have a 3.1A USB charger, I connected it to that and waited the two hours for the red light to go out on the speaker (the light is red when it is charging). As a point of interest, that same light is used to show when the unit is connected (glows a solid white) when it is not connected (does a slow blink) and when it is in search mode (rapid blink).

Once the unit had charged (two hours) and the light had gone out, I turned the unit on. I guess they wanted you to know it was working since they have a short music piece they play when it powers up and also when it powers down. While a bit of an annoyance, it is not too bad It would be nice if you could turn it off though.

Ok, now on to the important part, how does it work? I first tried it out using a Kindle Fire HD. I turned on Bluetooth in the Kindle and then turned on the speaker and held down the center button (puts the unit into search mode--NOTE: ensure you hold it down for a few seconds to get it into search mode, you will know it is there if the light goes to a rapid blink). The Kindle found the speaker and added it without issue.

Once paired, I played several different types of music with everything from string instruments, to singing, to orchestra, to country, to swing, to ragtime and it all sounded great! I was VERY impressed with the volume and lack of distortion. It easily filled two rooms with sound that was quite loud and with no distortion. The frequency range appears to be from about 75 hz to around 20,000 hz based upon the sound reproduction with the pieces that I played. While the base is not phenominal, it is very good.

I was able to seperate the speaker from the Kindle by more that 30 feet. It connected and stayed connected even when I went upstairs and placed two walls between it and the Kindle. At the third wall it started dropping out. I was able to take the speaker outside onto my back deck with the Kindle left in the front room and it still continued to play without problems.

I do not know if this unit is actually stereo and I am not sure it would make any difference since there is little seperation distance, but it does sound very good and I am very pleased with it.

I also connected this unit to my IPAD and to my ITOUCH as well as to three different computers and it continued to work well. NOTE: I did not try to connect to all of them at the same time! I turned off the bluetooth connection on each one before trying to make a connection on another device.

If you are looking for an exceptional speaker that produces very good sound from a Bluetooth connection, I would highly recommend that you consider this speaker.

One quick comment about support for this unit, going to the company's website to ask for assistance (I wanted to know if this was actually stereo or not) you needed to enter in the product name and serial number. The product name is NOT on the website and there is NO serial number on my unit. So, not sure how well this unit will be supported and how you can obtain service as those are required fields and you cannot go anywhere without that information. I just put in "N/A" for both fields and have not, as of yet, received a response. I will update this when I hear back from them.

5Best Bluetooth speaker in its price range
By Average Customer
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1YCT3RQL9R9NT In my quest for a Bluetooth speaker, I found one by a.m.p (Antec Mobile Products). I recognized the Antec name having built computers for a while so I decided to give the SP1 a shot based on my previous experience with their cases and power supplies.

Having used it for several weeks now, I have to say that I'm more than satisfied with this buy because of the speaker's quality and price. The sound is clear and the volume is ample. I use it with my phone and iPad and my music, movie, and gaming experience is much better with the improved sound. It's hard to believe that such good sound can come out of a unit at this price.

I've used the SP1 in my room, kitchen, office, and outdoors. The rubberized exterior makes the unit easy to hold and carry. I get really good range with it (even beyond what the manual states) but once in a while I'll experience some breakup. However, this happens with every Bluetooth unit - even the most expensive Bluetooth devices suffer from some sort of interference.

If you're looking for a wireless speaker, look no further. This is a definite winner.

4Best value for those who want better sound quality than cheaper bluetooth speakers.
By Strategist
The front is normal speakers, and the back is bass. This design is what helps with maintaining audibility and clarity even though you point it in different directions. The back looks identical to the front. But the device overall is trapezoid shaped, with the front face being the large face, back face being the smaller face, and the top and bottom faces being the "legs" of the trapezoid.

The sound quality of music remains clear even when you turn it in every-which-other direction. When listening to voice or podcasts, words remain clear and intelligible as well, unlike other speakers that blast sound in only one direction, or just have lots of distortion.

DETAILED DOWNSIDES:
1) there are no track skip buttons on the unit itself
2) the software is not as clean. When I turn it on, the music track I was playing on google music player skips a track for no reason. When I press the physical center button, which should act as "pause", my IPP podcast player app doesn't actually pause, but pauses for a moment, and always resumes playing. When the power is turned off, it also stops playing it on my phone, instead of continuing to play on my phone.
3) the so called rubber is actually rather slippery in your hands. As you may know, the friction force between two objects or materials is dependent on both materials. So this rubber/coating may be designed to have high grip on certain surfaces, but certainly not in your hands. The rubber also attracts dust.
4) no battery level display. -_-
5) while the charge cable is the same shape as the thinner android phone chargers, this cable cannot transmit data for your phone to PC like a normal cable can. It can only transmit power. so if you want to use a cable interchangeably with your phone and speaker, use your phone's cable, not the one that comes with the SP1. Also, the charging cable is short.
6) You can't open the case in one shot. you have to do one side a little bit, then do the other side. Kind of annoying and you can keep trying to do the first side if you let gravity pull it back down (suggest tilting it when you open it).
7) mine started buzzing/clicking, but seems to have disappeared. In my experience minor hiccups like these tend to reappear later down the road. Use the warranty. it is 3 years. (edit: incorrect. it is 1 year according to the manual)
8) lack of colors / interchangeability of color schemes / ugly color choices. - the video on youtube shows a white rubber/black grill plate/and white inside version, but it is not available. Black is the best say to go. I would have chosen white, save for the fact that it would have to be white and pink. seriously color fail, Antec a.m.p Get blue in there, the most popular color in the world. and get some interchangeable color customization (if that's too costly, at least provide better color schemes than ugly greens and forcing pink with white.

DETAILED UPSIDES (apart from amazing sound quality and amazing bass):
1) The construction is seems sturdy and solid. very likely to be durable for a long time. The grill plates are solid, so you don't have to worry about denting them, or getting internal speaker parts damaged.
2) fancy, pleasant case that makes it good to carry things in. It has a push snap open/close mechanism on plastic/clear case, as opposed to cardboard that is hard to open or gets crushed/worn out. It also is a first protection against water damage (I'm NOT claiming it's water proof here. It's just a first measure against damage because of the material and design).
3) All of the controls are on one face (the right face, not the left face). They did it right. placing them at the end of a long unit is how you do it, and all on one face if possible. (tangent: btw, why do smartphones have headphone jacks on top, but charge port on the bottom? that's annoying because the bottom charge cable gets in the way if you try to prop it up.)
4) The warranty is 3 years, an important piece of information that is not listed on amazon, or the a.m.p website - i called in to find out this info.

NEUTRAL/EITHER WAY:
- the charging cable and 3.5mm male to male cable are both flatwire. But they ends end abruptly with little overmold or strain relief, making it susceptible to damage from bending at the ends.
- The position of the 3.5mm jack is very close to the charging connector and positioned between the charging connector and the on/off switch, making it kind of inconvenient to access. But then again, that design may protect your 3.5mm jack, so not nec a negative or positive.
- the 3.5mm aux jack is an audio in, not for plugging in your earphones or anything like that.
- the font they chose for the "a.m.p" looks like d.w.e when read upside down... just some random FYIlol.

COMPARISONS (The SP1 is better/more cost-effective than all of the following):
1) I recommend buying this product over the $75 Auvio (inhouse brand from radioshack), even if the Auvio goes on sale for $50 because: 1) the Auvio sound quality is very directional and loses clarity and volume drastically with direction; 2) is low quality, and i had problems on both of the ones i tried (bass is dead, other one chirps and speaker phone doesn't work); 3) the controls and charge cable is on the back, lower end, making it not very good for placing it on most locations (cable damage), and hard to reach controls. However, it has onboard track skip controls. So AUVIO's advantage is that it's cheaper, and has track controls. otherwise, everything is worse than the SP1. However, the AUVIO has software that is far less buggy, and behaves intuitively, as well as hard physical buttons for track skipping.
2) I recommend this over the jawbone jambox (small one): the small/regular jambox is trash in tersm of sound quality. it's muffled and is distorted and costs $180. definitely pass.
3) I recommend this over the big jawbone jambox. The big jambox is really big (neutral point), and although it can be louder, it is still not quite as clear of a sound quality than the SP1. it also costs like $300? definitely pass.
4) I recommend this over the Beats Pill. Beats Pill just has no bass. also way overpriced $200.
5) I recommend this over the JBL charge. JBL charge's sound quality is pretty good and gets loud at decent anti-distortion sound quality, but the SP1 has solid solid bass and great clarity at loud volumes. The price difference is not justified. JBL charge is $150 whereas SP1 is $75 or so. so definitely pass. JBL charge is also larger, and its shape makes it prone to rolling off tables.

FYI FYI! I called a.m.p and it seems the SP1 Plus (SP1+ ?) is coming out in November. It will have improved quality, with a kickass feature of being able to connect two speakers to one phone for stereo effect. You can get two for members of your family, and "borrow" one for awesome sauce when they are not using theirs.

5Beats Bose CineMate Series II Digital Home Theater Speaker System
By Rick
I purchased the Onkyo LS3100 ENVISION system for $500 from Fry's Electronics after listening to similar speaker systems for our new flat screen TV. The salesman demonstrated three other systems, all costing $100 to $300 more than the Onkyo system. I purchased the Onkyo system because it seemed like it provided acoustically similar sound to the higher priced systems, and the price was better for our budget. A week after purchasing the Onkyo system, Bose put many of their speaker systems on sale, and the price of the Bose CineMate Series II Digital Home Theater Speaker System dropped to just above $500. For that price, I thought the Bose might be a better sounding system. So, I purchased it from Fry's knowing that I still had time to return the Onkyo system if I decided to keep the Bose system. I set both systems up in our family room connected to the TV, and played them one against the other to the same DVD at different volumes. I concluded that the Onkyo system not only sounded better, but had more features to offer, such as the wireless subwoofer and Bluetooth features (the Bose system lacks these and other features). The main reason I think the Onkyo system sounds better is because the subwoofer sounds better. It will play louder than the Bose subwoofer will, if you want it that loud. By comparison, the Bose subwoofer was limited at full volume and did not have the same sound definition as the Onkyo subwoofer. Because of this and since the Bose system does not have as many features, I will be taking the Bose system back to the store.

UPDATE 2/23/2013. We did not immediately return the Bose CineMate speakers. My wife and I did a side-by-side comparison of both speaker systems for about a week. We both concluded that the Bose CineMate speakers had an overall better sound--a little fuller and warmer sounding. However, to put things in perspective, at this price point the better sound of the Bose CineMate speakers is only marginal, which is why we kept going back and forth for a week as to which system had the better quality sound. We almost kept the Bose speaker system because of this. Still, even though the Bose CineMate speakers may sound better, the Bose system really lacks in the features that the Onkyo speaker system has, so we kept the Onkyo speaker system anyway. Here are a few of the features that the Onkyo speaker system has that the Bose system does not have:

* The Onkyo speakers automatically come on when we turn the TV on. Not so with the Bose, which requires you to separately turn on the speakers with the little remote required to operate the Bose speaker system.
* We can adjust the volume of the Onkyo speakers with any other remote control device that we have in the house, including our cable remote. This is because the Onkyo system is pre-programmed to operate with many other remote controls. With the Bose system, you can only adjust the volume with the Bose remote.
* The Onkyo system has a wireless bluetooth subwoofer. The bluetooth in the system can be used to pair up any compatible bluetooth devices to stream music through the speakers. My daughter loves this feature to play music from her iPhone. The sound of the music is as good as any stereo system we own, although I'm sure there's better sounding speakers for this purpose if you're willing to pay for them. This is a definite plus for some people. I asked at Fry's and was told that no other speaker system comes with this bluetooth feature built into it. The Bose system definitely does not have it, but you might be able to add it with a third-party device.

I still give the Onkyo speaker system 5 stars because it is decent sounding and feature laden at this price point. Others may prefer the sound of the Bose CineMate speakers and not care about the features of the Onkyo speaker system, however.

5A big step up in sound quality from a TV sound bar.
By Katawampas
This is a big step up from just using a sound bar with your TV. It is designed for people who want better sound than a typical TV sound bar but don't have a lot of room for a 5.1/7.1 sound system or don't want to make a big investment in a more expensive 5+ speaker + subwoofer + amplifier, etc.

FYI:
2.1 means that there are 2 speakers and a subwoofer.
5.1 mean that there are 5 speakers (2 front, 2 rear, 1 center front) and a subwoofer.

This speaker system is designed for TV sound or if you want to stream music from your Bluetooth enabled iPod/Smartphone/etc. It will not give you that 5 speaker theater sound when watching movies but the sound is surprisingly good and rich. Listening to streaming music from my smart phone & iPod Nano 7 was very good.

The level of bass (subwoofer sound) can be controlled from the included remote. The system turns on/off automatically when you turn on/off your TV & can be controlled from your TV remote so you don't need to use the included remote once you set your bass level & sound mode. The included remote is very simple & small: Power, Mute, Input (TV or Bluetooth), Volume, Subwoofer Level, Sound Mode (Normal or Vocal Mode).

Remember that Bluetooth signal strength will limit how far away from the Bluetooth controller you can be. This system has pretty good signal strength; I could go about 50 feet away & through 2 drywall walls before the signal starting breaking up.

It was very easy to hook up to my TV. The directions are clear & include diagrams/drawings. If your TV has optical digital audio out you shouldn't need to run to the store before connecting your TV. It comes with a digital optical cable and speaker wires. All the TV's I've purchased in the last 4 years have digital optical audio out with TOSLINK connectors so this seems to be common. On my TV this is labeled "S/PDIF" on the back. If you have this connection, all you need is this system and a TV. No other devices, speakers, amplifier, receiver, etc. are needed. If you have a TV without digital optical audio out, you may have to buy an additional cable.

The speakers come with stands that can be placed near your TV or mounted on the wall. They are nice looking/unobtrusive. The speakers have 4 slots so you can choose to mount or stand them horizontally or vertically. The subwoofer is wireless.

Most music (CD/MP3) is recorded in 2 channels (stereo) but movies are 5.1 or more. So you will lose some detail/effects when listening to movie DVD/blu-ray soundtracks on a 2.1 system. But the sound enjoyment is still far superior with a system like this Onkyo than a TV sound bar or no external TV speakers.

First I tried this system in a 12x14 bedroom with a 26" TV; the sound was very good but felt like overkill. Next I tried it in my home great room which is a large room with a cathedral ceiling and a wall of windows. The sound was good but it didn't sound big enough. This system is not really meant for such a large room. I've since moved it to my cabin living room/open kitchen/dining area which is small with 8 foot ceilings, about 20'x20'. I hooked the speakers to each side of the TV which is in a front corner of the room & the subwoofer is just a couple feet away. The sound is excellent in this location. I'm really impressed. Since I don't have a stereo system in that room, I also really like the Bluetooth capability for listening to my iPod & it makes watching movies on a 32" TV a pleasure.

To attach the speakers to the TV, I just used a thin piece of wood, cut it to the correct length, screwed in a couple screws to hold the speakers & attached it with screws to the mounting holes on the back of the TV. You can't see the wood from the room, but I painted it black to make it even less visible.

I think this system is a very good value in its category. It exceeds my expectations.

5Great for music as well as TV
By P. MSakamoto
Overview: This is a great alternative to BOSE 2.1 channel systems for TV or the low priced multi-channel (e.g. 5.1) home theatre speaker systems. Unlike many home theatre sound systems, the LS3100 works at least as well for music as it does for movies.

Setup: The LS3100 is just complex enough to warrant reading the manual before connecting the parts. It consists of:
1. A combination control unit/amplifier unit in a low-profile box that really should be wall mounted. It is very light and compact for what it does - power the two midrange/treble speakers, control the woofer, interface to the TV, the remote, and communicate over Bluetooth with your BT enabled audio devices. This control box has a "power brick" that needs to be connected to a wall socket (120VAC). I think it's too bad that Onkyo didn't just put the small power supply inside the control box instead. Fortunately, the power brick has a removable AC cord that plugs into the wall or power strip since this keeps it from taking up extra sockets as many power bricks do. Still, why not put this in the main box? We all have too many power bricks to manage.
2. A small, simple remote control that has no lights or screen. It simply controls the main volume, on/off, sub-woofer volume and the sound "mode" (surround, stereo, etc.).
3. Two speakers for left and right channel. Each has two speaker elements in it. Each has a stand that can mount the speaker in a greater or lesser angle in either of the vertical or horizontal position. That is, four different ways. These can also be wall mounted as well. They are very nicely finished and are pretty dense in weight. The hardware for these includes a safety cable to keep them from falling off the wall or a shelf as well as heavy duty speaker wire of about 8' in length. The wires are pre-stripped and ready to mount in the terminals in the back of the speakers. They are color coded for +/- at both the speaker and the amp/control box end.
4. One sub-woofer in a black composite cabinet. This should be carefully placed according to instructions, but it is not critical that it be dead center of the sound stage. The receives it's signals from a wireless link to the control box. It requires a plug to 120VAC, however, so it needs to be near an outlet. The cord goes into the SW without a power brick, which is a nice improvement over the control box/amp.
5. Miscellaneous HW to make sure the speakers are well mounted and non-slip feet to stick on the speakers or their stands.

Testing With a TV:
I connected the optical output of my Sony blueray DVD player to the optical input of the LS3100. The speakers were placed as suggested in the manual around my 55: HDTV. I watched "The Matrix" on it and found the experience good, but not superior. The stereo imaging was good. The volume without distortion was good, especially during the classic gun fight scenes. Special effects sounds from the subwoofer were good, but not miraculous. Now, all this is compared to my seven year old set of NHT EVO-1 home theatre speakers running off of my B and K precision 507AVR receiver (175W/channel x 5.1). I have a separate NHT subwoofer amp with two NHT 12" subwoofers. So, this is not a fair comparison. It's just to say that the LS3100 is not going to make you toss your desire for a full-on HT system, if that is on your possession bucket list. However, for less than 1/10th the price, one 12th the physical space requirement and a lot less wiring and installation hassle, it is very respectable. It may be the best of the 2.1 speaker systems that I've listened to, but it will not make you feel like something is creeping in from behind you or make it feel like your pants legs are being whooshed during explosions like a higher end system with all the channels, power, features and expense.

I was able to be up and running with a respectable small scale system that could be a great apartment or bedroom upgrade in less than ten minutes from unpacking. I will not be shutting down my legacy big system, however. So, excellent for its intended use. It's just that the marketing hype makes it seem like it may be more that that.

Testing with an iPhone and music over Bluetooth:
Since the LS3100 supports BT audio, I gave it a go with my iPhone 4s and iTunes. I played various rock, blues, classical guitar, female vocals, jazz (solo and big band) and they all sounded great! I realize the BT connection from an iPhone is not very purist, but this is probably more typical of the way a system like this would be used, IMHO. It connected easily and without security code entry. I personally think the lack of security code entry is great because there is no display for the LS3100 and the "0000" codes that most systems use are really a joke anyways.

The sound was wonderful for a system of this size and cost. The crossover between the smaller speakers and the SW was seamless. The deep bass was very clean, precise and did not "boom" on certain ranges or notes as cheaper units sometimes do. Stereo imaging and the perceived sound stage were very clear and precise. It was engaging enough that I played two or three times as many tunes as I had intended because it was so enjoyable. In fact, I would say excellent. Once again, not quite the $10k system, but the gap was narrower than in the home theatre use test. In fact, now that the review testing is done, i will move the LS3100 to my home office as the primary speaker system. I think this may be because the source material is pretty much originally recorded and mixed as two channel stereo. This more closely matches the physical capability of the LS3100 and does not demand the tricky real time phase computation and output that the Dolby 5.1 requires.

Loosely comparing this to the various BOSE 2.1 small systems, I would say the Onkyo is the clear winner. The bass response alone is enough to cause me to choose it over any other unit I've listened to. Now, this may not be fair since I was able to set up and test the Onkyo at home in a well-controlled environment and the BOSE was heard at the BOSE store where the good rooms are reserved for the higher end systems. The BOSE aren't bad, it's just that this system is much better.

Conclusion: This is a very nice 2.1 speaker system. It is a great "space saver" system for compact dwelling spaces. At this price, i would choose it over other products in the category, especially for music.

5These JBLs rock the house!
By Shelley Gammon
I will first admit - I'm not an expert audiophile - but like anyone, I love good, rich sound. Everyone has had speakers you can't turn up too loud or else you get too much rattle, hum or both - not the case with these babies. Only after we got this speaker system did we realize we needed a receiver - so it took a while before that acquisition. We tried to bypass this requirement - but you simply cannot get anything other than audio from the subwoofer without a surround sound receiver.

The subwoofer is big... as in big enough for an adult man to sit on comfortably in respect to width, depth and height... but the black cabinet it's in is very unobtrusive and is not a distraction in our living room at all.

The included cables are very lengthy to accommodate a giant room. We were able to conceal most of the wires via the moulding around the ceiling - the speakers look nice, and sound AWESOME.

Whether we're watching an action movie or even the news - the sound is just richer. Hearing audio on other TVs now just sounds flat in comparison.

We've turned the volume up as loud as we could stand without shattering our teeth - and there was never any hum or rattle... despite being able to feel the bass in your feet and finger tips when there are explosions, thunder rumblings or sci-fi foley effects.

Our goal in acquiring these speakers was to have better audio for the movies we watch, but the acquisition of a receiver also allowed us to listen to AM/FM via these speakers - and again - rich sound that envelops you.

I've attended in-store demonstrations by company reps for various speaker systems and frankly - I don't think any of those high-dollar systems held that much of an edge over these JBLs. I have a number of JBL speaker sets for computers, and iPods in the house - and the brand has never been a disappointment. The sound quality is not only superb, but the system is very reasonably priced for what you get. My husband sometimes makes it home from work before I do, and when I approach our front door, I can hear/feel the house shaking from the sound - but I am not knocked out onto the porch when I enter - the sound is as much felt as it is heard. It's not overwhelming or deafening at normal levels - but still immersive. You feel like your IN the action when you watch a movie - much like going to the high dollar theater today - without the problems of your feet sticking to the floor.

4Uncolored, full-range, very deep bass, good value
By Skippermdj
From the mid-bass up these are very neutral, uncolored natural sounding speakers. They don't call attention to themselves and allow full enjoyment of the source material. Really good source material sounds fantastic, mediocre material sounds mediocre. No honks, shrieks, buzzes, phony "presence" or harshness. I have heard speakers with better definition that create a better sense of "being there", but always for several times more money.

The bass is something else - in a positive way. Listening to an electric bass or symphony orchestra, the fundamentals are just solid all the way down. The subsonics are amazing for a 10" woofer. The whole room shakes and the sound pressure can be felt in the chest, gut and butt. Adds realism to action/adventure movies and give the kids a thrill.

5Simplest and Best 2.1 System!
By CM
I did extensive research before purchasing the Bose Cinemate GS II Series; but before I start my review I have a quick comparison to share by comparing a $300 panasonic system to the Bose Cinemate GS II: I previously owned a panasonic 2.1 system with built in up-convert DVD player which recently broke (lasted about a year). Sound quality on the Bose Cinemate GS II is markedly better than the panasonic system! Plus my audio system is not tied to a standard DVD player. I should have bought this first--instead of being $300 behind the curve than if I just bought the Cinemate GS II to begin with. Just though I should share that in case you are trying to justify the cost.

REVIEW--Info I discovered during my research and since owning for 3 months: I listened to the Cinemate II and the Cinemate GS II side by side in the store, both using the Toslink (digital optical audio) connection and also with the Component (analog audio) connection while watching an action scene from Kung Fu Panda in both BluRay and regular DVD. To me, the Cinemate GS II's sound was clearer and also sharper (crisper highs and clearer mids like with voices). The Cinemate II sounded great too (a lot better than the panasonic), but the sounds tended to be more muddled in the mid-to-high range (as compared to the the Cinemate GS II). But for $200 less and if your ears don't mind the difference (or can't tell the difference) then the Cinemate II is the better bargain. Also, the Cinemate GS II has the universal remote, but I don't use it ( I use a logitech Harmony Universal Remote). The Cinemate II remote has volume up/down, mute, and power on/off. The Cinemate GS II remote has quite a bit of features (a lot actually), and it feels good in your hand; but if you really want one, they are available from Bose for $30.95.

Other good to know info: You can connect both the Toslink and Component audio into the interface module at the same time. The interface module will automatically default to component audio unless there is an active Toslink connection (an active Toslink connection will always override the component audio). What does this mean? I have my DishNetwork receiver connected to the interface module via the component connection for watching TV--this is how I normally use the Bose Cinemate GS II (sounds great by the way). I then have my BlueRay player connected to the interface module via the Toslink connection. When I want to watch a movie, all I have to do is power on the Blueray player and the Bose Cinemate GS II will automatically use the Toslink connection (overrides the component audio). When I am done watching a movie, I power off the Blueray player and the Cinemate GS II automatically switches back to my TV audio. Of course the Toslink audio is the better of the two, but with only two connections available I had to compromise (plus my TV has no Toslink out--which would have been the preferred solution). The interface module works exactly the same whether you have the Cinemate II or the Cinemate GS II. Also, there is a Bass adjustment knob on the Acoustimass module, so you can turn it up or down to your preference. Sorry there are no other manual adjustments that you can do to the Bose Cinemate GS II.

Room filling sound: I have the Bose Cinemate GS II in my living room which is pretty big and it opens directly into the kitchen; total size is 20x60. Despite the room size, and even at a pretty low volume, I can easily understand a TV shows conversations because of the crisp and precise audio reproduction. I use to watch with closed captioning (so the TV can volume can stay at a normal level), but now I have turned closed captioning off.

Even at max volume (watching GI Joe), it was very very loud and the whole house was shaking, but the system did not distort at all--in almost disbelief it seemed to sound even better and clearer. I think that is attributed to the Bose TrueSpace technology which is used to covert 5.1 audio into a 2.1 system; the louder it got, I guess, the more the TrueSpace seemed to kick in.

Despite my acclaim for this system it is pricey; but, it sounds great, it was very easy to setup and it has the Bose 5 year limited warranty on the speakers. However, no matter how much a 2.1 system is touted as a possible replacement for a 5.1 or even a 7.1 system, in my opinion there are no 2.1 systems that can truly replace a 5.1 or 7.1 system. But if you don't like running wires and want a minimalist system with superb sound then I strongly recommend the Bose Cinemate GS II; or if budget minded, or can't discern the audio difference, then the Bose Cinemate II is a solid 2nd choice.

5Excellent Sound
By J. Hodges
I know a lot of people like to knock Bose. I've heard "no highs, no lows, must be Bose" and then I turn around and someone else is shouting how Bose only has lows and highs and no mids. I just went through several sound system attempting to find one I like. I wanted something simple and didn't care to have wires running everywhere so I canceled out surround sound. I went through many soundbar type systems and was disappointed to say the least.

I started researching these speakers online and found that the people who bought them liked them but others said they were no good just due to the Bose name. A person on one of the forums mentioned a soundbar system which I had previously returned as being comparable to these speakers yet nearly $500 cheaper. Now having owned both system I can laugh at that statement as there is no comparison.

None of the other systems came anywhere close to sounding as good as these. Crisp highs, loud vocals, rich mids, very deep bass. I have to turn the bass down on this system so things will stop shaking on the walls. You can feel the bass. On the system that these speakers were compared to, I could only hear bass if I had the volume maxed and I had my ear pressed against the subwoofer. Not even joking.

People who haven't owned a Bose system ever, or in the past several years, really need to stop bashing something they know nothing about. I will admit that maybe they are priced a bit high. However, you get a great sounding system and I'm not sure you could do any better at this price. I have heard speaker systems (receiver/speaker/subs) that cost over $1000 not sounding as good as this system.

My expectations were shattered by this system and I would recommend anyone who has the money to spend and wants a simple, elegant and great sounding system, to pick these up and the nice stands (~$800 at this time for both speakers and stands).

(I do not work for Bose, am not some Bose "fanboy" (this is my first Bose system), have never posted anything about Bose before anywhere.)

2Won't output any DTS content
By B. Kemper
Pros: Remarkable sound from Dolby 5.1 sources. Easy to install if you have an optical digital output from your HDTV

Cons: Won't decode any DTS-ES or DTS-HD signal, the latter being the most common for Blueray discs. You must step down DTS sources to PCM, losing most of the 5.1 mix and ALL of the magic this system offers with Dolby-encoded content.

I experienced the Cinemate system at both Best Buy and at the Bose store in our local mall. Best Buy used the Bose propriety demo disk. The Bose store used the Blueray disk of Toy Story 3. What the Bose employees didn't tell me was that they had changed the settings on their BlueRay player output to PCM to allow it to be played by the Cinemate system. Most BlueRay discs are coded in DTS-HD. This system will not play any DTS content.

It took me a while to figure out what the issue was and a call to Bose's tech support confirmed that Cinemate systems do not support any DTS content. They said I would have to step down the output to PCM. I did this and then compared the Balin's Tomb scene from The Fellowship of the Ring using Dolby 5.1 and the DTS-ES choices in the film's menus. The difference was devastating. The Dolby 5.1 sounded rich, with all the proper echo and sound effects. The DTS output sounded flat, had no separation of the sound effects and might as well have been coming out of my TV speakers.

If simply want to get great sound from Cable or Satellite HD content (all broadcast in Dolby 5.1 or less) this is great system. If you want to use the system with a Blueray player, don't buy it.

5AWESOME
By Jack M. Mafera
I have this system with the addition of 4 RB 41's , 2 for front high and 2 for rears. I'm using the RS 42"s for side center's. For subs I'm using RW10d"s. I'm hooked up to a Onkyo 110 watt per channel A/V receiver. Room size is 15 X 23 and these speakers are fantastic. I put my system together piece by piece. Other than the RW10D subs all these speakers are open stock, so buying them one or two at a time is doable but I would check stocking level's before doing so. I'm sure the replacement subs are great. Good system. Klipsch is top shelf. I'm sure you will be satisfied with the performance. They can all handle more power than I'm using but the 110 is crisp and clean and I haven't powered it up over 65 % ( well maybe a little higher for Top Gun ) . Great for music also.
